Guam is a US territory in the South Pacific.
On July 21, 1944- known to locals as "Liberation Day" American forces landed on Guam. After three weeks of bitter war the island was declared safe and under American rule. The island's position was strategically recognized as a command post
for US Western-Pacific operations. Since that time it has been considered by the US government as one of its top military base posts in the world.
The strong culture of the Chamorro people is very well preserved and still abundant on the island. The Chamorro culture is one that honors its elders and matriarchs. Many traditions and stories of the people are still taught and told in daily life-despite many attempts throughout the years by foreign cultures to end these traditions. Visitors to Guam will find traditional festivals, arts and museums highlighting the culture and its way of life throughout the year.
However, this is not to say, that this is a sleepy island caught in its past. Many new world activities thrive in this environment. People enjoy sports such as racing, lots of golf-including 7 world class courses designed by major names in sport- diving, sailing, tennis---all year round due to Guam's beautiful weather. Tons of public and commercial fitness centers are operated on the island as well.
For those interested in competitive league sports-there is baseball, bowling, soccer, football, rugby, swimming, running, cycling, volleyball, martial arts, handball, boxing, wrestling, paddling, jet skiing, windsurfing-plus golf and tennis-year round.
Other activities include sightseeing, dolphin watching, hiking, camping and some of the best shopping--traditional, malls and duty free-in the world.
Obviously, Guam is a paradise for water activities and many different locations offer year round instruction and participation.
For kids--many amusement parks, arcades, movie theaters, teen clubs and centers abound in each neighborhood and city.
For those who love food-Guam is a mecca of fine cuisine offering a variety of fare including Chamorro, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Chinese, Mexican and European restaurants for all budgets. In addition, American fast food chains have been popping up throughout the island so you are never at a loss as to what to eat!
The location of the island itself makes for easy travel to see the world. Simply put, you can be in a variety of major world class cities including Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney, Beijing and Honolulu in hours. The Guam Airport offers many direct flights with reliable carriers.
Housing options range from executive homes to condos-ocean side villas to duplexes and apartments. Many single family style houses are readily available for both purchase and lease. The housing market here is quite healthy compared to that currently on the mainland's.
Full American style public schools systems are available to all residents and citizens of the territory. Half the government budget is education related. Guam has some of the highest teaching credential requirements in the US. All in all, there are just about 40 public schools and just under 20 private schools on the island. There is also a community college and a University. Chinese and Japanese communities both support schools that preserve their culture and language.
Simply put-Guam is a terrific place to live-beautiful scenery-rich culture-and updated recreation. Practicing health care on Guam is incredibly rewarding as this island is looking forward to additional high quality health facilities and embrace it.
You will find yourself quite happy in Guam!
